Student Evaluation

Grades (marks) for Fluency class are determined by:

  • Graded Projects, exams and language assessment (oral and written) = 50%
  • Active Participation = 50%
Criteria for Active Participation Grade

For Marks 10-9  (Excellent) Student:
  • Always speaks English in class.
  • Always has a cooperative attitude.
  • Is always respectful toward others (teacher and peers).
  • Always participates in class activities and discussions with insight and enthusiasm. Contributions are always positive and valuable.
Students in this category are self-motivated, ambitious, and active learners. They use English in class at all times, and could easily work and study in an English-only environment with no difficulty. These students show a great deal of maturity and seriousness in their attitude toward learning. These are the classroom leaders.
For Marks 8-7 (Good to very good) Student:

  • Almost always speaks English in class both to peers and to teacher.
  • Almost always has a cooperative attitude.
  • Is almost always respectful toward others (teacher and peers).
  • Almost always participates in class activities and discussions with insight and enthusiasm. Contributions are generally positive and valuable. 
Students in this category are, with few exceptions, self-motivated learners. They are enthusiastic and active participants, and strive to use English while in class, and are successful most of the time. They could work and study in an English-only environment, with only minor difficulties. They show a growing maturity and earnest respect for learning, and rarely need reminders for proper classroom etiquette.
For Marks 6 (Average) Student: 
  • Mostly speaks English in class both to peers and teacher.
  • Mostly has a cooperative attitude--listens and follows teacher instructions most of the time.
  • Is respectful toward others (teacher and peers), most of the time.
  • Participates in class activities and discussions with insight and enthusiasm. Contributions are sometimes positive and valuable.
Students in this category show often show initiative, but need guidance in achieving the goals set before them. They are mostly heard speaking English in class, with some lapses, and could work and study in an English-only environment with practice. These students almost never need reminders for proper classroom etiquette, and for the most part, strive toward a seriousness toward learning,
For Marks 5 or below (Poor) Student:
  • Often heard not using English when conversing with peers in class.
  • Often has a less than cooperative attitude. Teacher too often has to remind student to listen, put away electronic devices, or stop other disruptive behaviors that affect their learning and the learning of others.
  • Often detracts from the positive learning flow of the classroom through poor attitude or behavior.
  • Rarely participates in class activities and discussions in a constructive manner. Contributions often lack a positive direction, and can be disruptive.
Students in this category often show a lack of initiative and self-motivation toward classroom goals, and need considerable guidance to complete tasks set before them. They often show poor attitudes toward learning, and require consistent reminders for proper classroom etiquette. The can speak English, but prefer to use their native language when speaking with peers.
